If you love Chinese Dim Sum (known as "Yum Cha" in some places), this pocket guide is an indispensable tool for you to discover more about this popular Chinese tradition.

Wherever you go, the Yum Cha Pocket Guide in your iPhone or iPod Touch provides handy information of over 100 popular Dim Sum items available in most Chinese Restaurants in the world.

Each Dim Sum in the guide comes with:
- a clear picture showing what the item looks like
- description in English telling you what it is
- its name in Chinese writing so that the local Chinese know what you are talking about
- its standard Mandarin PinYin (pronunciation) if you want to learn how to say it properly
- information about key ingredients (especially useful for people with food allergy)
- estimated energy content (Kcal/100g serving) for the health conscious minds
- Cantonese pronunciations of the food names in real native voice for those interested to learn

Dim Sum items are grouped by food type, key ingredients and estimated energy content. These classifications are accessible through three tab buttons such that you can find what you want to focus on.

To help you locate items which you dont even have an exact idea what they are called, the guide provides a handy search function based on partial text matching of the food description. The search result refines itself while you enter more information (also known as incremental searching).

A bookmark feature is also included. You can add Dim Sum items you like to the Favorites List. Just show this list to the order-taker when placing order or use it as a reference when you prepare the order form.

Always remember to take the Yum Cha Pocket Guide to go with you !

Pros and cons of Yum Cha Dim Sum (Food_Hong Kong) app for iPhone and iPad

Yum Cha Dim Sum (Food_Hong Kong) app good for

Impressive photos! Really appreciate the calorie count. Great to have the mandarin but since dim sum is Cantonese - shouldnt you also have cantonese on the application? It would be more useful for yum cha restaurants whether you are in Hong Kong, Canada or the USA.
This app is great! I downloaded it while we were at dim sum (a little late to order with tho) and explained a few things to a friend who is new to dim sum. There are many items missing that we can get at the Center Grand here in Calgary - it would be great to be able to add my own pictures and upload others to/from a website. May not be worth a full $3, but its the best one out there so far. March 2009
Good clear pronunciation and vivid photos. A must have for any dim sum lover whos not a native Cantonese speaker. Love to see more items added in future releases. Definitely worth the money!
Could you guys create more extensive database of restaurant meals/local market foods typical for Hong Kong? I find your calorie info in your app very useful as none of the meal tracking/weightloss apps contains local foods/meals. Most are based on North American diet and even if they list some "Chinese" items, its not the same. Thanks!
Nice sorting by food type, favorites is tremendous tool! Nice organization, search function good and interface is really good. Do like the pronunciation but I agree that adding Cantonese would be a smart move as I think most people are likely to be used in Cantonese environment.
Cantonese pronunciation is spot on! I love the ways you can categorize the food. The pictures help remind you of what you want to order when you are at the teahouse.

Some bad moments

For the price, I would have expect more content. Its ok if all you want to know is the name of a dish and how it sounds in Cantonese and the 1-2 main ingredients. The selection is relatively limited, and there is nothing about how each dish is prepare or its origin or any description whatsoever. I personally feel this should be free with ad supported.
Despite advertising Traditional/Simplified Mandarin, the app is traditional. Itunes links to support at a site that is 1) blocked from China, and 2) a blog, not an actual business support page. The app has no place for settings or preferences. Pictures are nice. Descriptions are OK.
